What is “Dorland’s Wax” Medium?
Dorland’s Wax by Jacquard is a versatile cold wax medium made from a special blend of pure waxes and damar resin.
Use as a protective topcoat
Dorland’s Wax is used as a protective topcoat for sealing and finishing a variety of media, from oil paintings to collages. Dorland’s Wax is especially popular as a varnish for watercolor and gouache paintings. It provides a durable, water-resistant finish that protects artwork from moisture, stains, dust and fingerprints, while adding depth to colors and allowing for framing and display without glass. It is easy to apply with a fine cloth or gloved hand, and the finish is malleable: leave it matte, or polish with a cloth after drying for an even satin shine.
Mix Dorland’s Wax with oil paints or powdered pigments such as Pearl Ex to create heavy, super-matte, fast-drying colors for “cold wax painting,” unique textures, impasto effects and for layering and palette knife techniques. By varying the ratio of medium to dye, you can easily control the transparency or opacity of the color. Add mineral spirits or solvent to dilute viscosity or adjust drying time.
Dorland’s Wax also provides a beautiful finish on wooden objects, such as jewelry or furniture, as well as metal, polymer clay, ceramics, drawings, photographs and more. Add a small amount of pigment, dye, oil paint or alcohol ink to color the medium, or apply it pure for a stylish, wax-finished look.Dorland’s Wax is a sealant, varnish and medium in one. It does not yellow over time and protects artwork for eternity.
